Malaysian airliner shot down in Ukraine, gov't says

A Malaysian passenger jet was shot down Thursday over eastern Ukraine, an official with Ukraine's Interior Ministry said.

280 passengers and 15 crew were on the Boeing 777, which was downed from a height of 33,000 feet, the official said.

There was no immediate word on the fate of the passengers and crew.

Malaysia Airlines confirmed it lost contact with the flight from Amsterdam to Malaysia.

"The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace," the airline said.
